How to Use Location Geotags on Instagram (Get More Followers from Your Posts and Stories)

Do you know how to use location geotags on your posts and in your Instagram™ Stories to reach more people? It helps you get discovered more in search.⁣This is a huge way to get more eyes on your posts and Instagram™ stories!

In this blog post, I’m sharing how to add location geotags to your posts and Instagram™ Stories. Plus, why they're an important part of your Instagram™ strategy.

In this blog post:

  • What is an Instagram™ Location Geotag?
  • Why You Should Use Location Geotags?
  • Location Geotags in Instagram™ Posts vs Instagram™ Stories
  • Final Tip

What is an Instagram™ Location Geotag?

An Instagram™ location geotag is gathered from the physical location of your mobile devices. For example, you’ll see a lot of my content tagged with various spots around Boston.

From Downtown Boston to the Boston Commons, I always want my content to show up where potential customers are browsing.

Why You Should Use Location Geotags?

If you want to show up in a hub, you need to tag your location on your content. This ensures you’re showing up in another Instagram™ neighborhood. Plus, it ups your organic searchability.

Plus, content tagged with a location gets on average 79% higher engagement.

You don’t need a brick and mortar store to grab the attention of your local customers. Even better, you’re expanding your Instagram™ reach to out-of-towners exploring your area.

Location Geotags in Instagram™ Posts vs Instagram™ Stories

Whether you’re adding an Instagram™ post or Story, adding a location only takes a few steps. To add your location to your Instagram Story, tap on “add location” above your post image.

Then, Instagram™ will suggest a list of locations based on your current location. You can also type in a location if you don’t see the physical location you’re looking for.

It’s also easy to add your location to your Instagram™ Stories. You can find the location geotag sticker in the Stories stickers. I recommend adding a location geotag to all of your Instagram Stories clips.

You can even hide the sticker under text so it doesn't distract from your Instagram™ Story.

Ninja Tip: Add geotag locations even if you’re not there.

If your ideal customers don’t live in your area, go ahead and tag your content with your preferred location. For example, I tagged this Instagram Post with Encinitas, California. Even though I didn't tag it in the moment, I was able to add the location after I got back to Boston.

Sue B. Says: Keep your local audience in mind.

For example, I live in Boston. It’s a big city, but I actually live in Downtown Boston. That is another location hub where my potential customers might be hanging out. I always want to tag my Instagram™ content with different spots so I show up in as many location hubs as possible.

Final Tip

Think of your Instagram™ location geotag like a hashtag strategy. Think about where your ideal customers are hanging out. That’s where you want your Instagram™ content to show up.
