Many entrepreneurs, especially in the online education industry, are the founder and CEO of their companies. But here’s something you might not know: I’m not the CEO of Sue B. Zimmerman Enterprise. Keep reading this blog post to learn why I’m not the CEO of my company, and why it could be a good option for your business too.

Meet My CEO, Morgan
Over the past eight years of my business, there’s been a lot of growth and tough choices. But none of it would have been possible without my business' CEO, Morgan Sutton.
With a background in systems and engineering, Morgan has overhauled the way the SBZ team operates. Guess what happened? Our business doubled! Watch this YouTube video to get an in-depth look at how we started the business.
Why Opposites Attract Even in Business
People ask us all the time: What’s the magic to our partnership? Honestly, it’s all about respect. It’s taken years of open communication. Now, we’re in a place where we understand and respect the superpowers that each of our team members brings to the business. That’s how we were able to hit a huge milestone in our business last year.
While it’s easy to get bogged down in frustration with your team, especially if you have different working styles, it’s important to remember that your differences can actually be an asset. Frustration is inevitable. But we always tell our clients, remember why you decided to start your own business.
It might take extra effort to communicate, create systems, and reassess the best way to structure your business. It’s all worth it at the end of the day because you get to be your own boss.
How Personality Tests Can Bring Out the Best in Your Team
If you’re looking to work well with someone, especially a new member of your team, you need to know how they work. That’s why a few years ago we took a CliftonStrengths assessment. When we took all of the personal out of how best to communicate, we were finally able to better understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
No surprise! My three strengths are Morgan’s three weaknesses and vice versa. Once we had that information we were able to more effectively communicate. The personality test also made it clear that it was in the best interest of the business for Morgan to take on the role of CEO.
But it’s not just about communicating with your team. When you understand your communication style, it can improve your relationship with your vendors and potential clients. I cannot stress enough the power of personality tests.
When You Might Need Outside Help
Finally, let’s talk about when you might need outside help. A lot of business owners have a hard time understanding that tipping point. For me, that tipping point came when I realized that I was struggling with the day-to-day of the business.
After taking the personality tests and having an honest conversation with Morgan, I knew that moving her into the CEO role was the best decision. Morgan has a background in systems and engineering, and she knew exactly how to apply that for the business.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your business, first take a breath. Then think about the root causes of why you’re overwhelmed. As tough as it is to admit, sometimes feeling overwhelmed is a clear sign that you need outside help.
Document your week so you can better understand what to automate, delegate, and eliminate. That’s the first thing you need to do in assessing how to find outside help.
