How to Keep your Instagram Account Safe with 2-Factor Authentication

Your Instagram™ business account settings are so important. You want to keep your account secure just like you would with any other account you have. That's why you need to use Instagram™ 2-factor authentication!
I get Instagram™ Direct Messages all the time from people who say “Sue B, I lost my Instagram account … Help!” That’s why in this blog post I’m going to show you how to turn on 2-factor authentication and set up other security measures.  Plus, one of my favorite strategies for saving rather than deleting old content.  In this blog post:

What is 2-Factor Authentication?

2-factor authentication is a security message that prompts you to enter a special code or confirm your login each time you or someone else tries to access your account.  While a ton of people use security measures for their emails or other secure accounts, I’m amazed at the number of people who consider it unnecessary for Instagram.  Hackers happen. You never want to put yourself at risk of losing a ton of time trying to recover your account or losing your Instagram™ account all together.

How to Turn on 2-Factor Authentication

Turning on 2-factor authentication just takes a few simple steps. To get started with 2-factor authentication, choose either:
  • Text message codes from your phone
  • Login codes from a third-party authentication app (such as Duo Mobile or Google Authenticator)
I prefer to receive my alerts directly to my phone, so that’s what I’m going to show you how to set up.  First, tap on the three bars in the top right corner of your profile. Sue B Zimmerman's colorful Instagram profile feed. Then tap on settings then security.  Sue B Zimmerman's Instagram security settings with 2-factor authentication toggled on. Now, tap on 2-factor authentication and then text message to set up your text message alerts.  Once you confirm the security code, you’re done!

Why Instagram™ Backup Codes are So Important

I also strongly recommend saving your backup codes information. These are codes you or your team can use when you can’t access your phone or email. Once you tap on backup codes, you will see your list of backup codes. Take a screenshot that you can save on your phone or in another secure place.

Why You Should be Using Instagram™ Archive

While you’ve got under-utilized Instagram™ features on your mind, let’s talk about one of my favorite best kept secrets on Instagram™. Of course, I’m talking about the archive. Rather than deleting old posts or videos that are not on brand, archive allows you to save this content in a private, secure place.  Watch this YouTube video to learn how the archive can help you take control of your Instagram™ feed.
