How to Know If You Ready to Hire Your First Team Member
As a soloprenuer it often feels like second nature to just do it all. But what happens when doing too much impacts the growth of your business? Keep reading this blog post to discover what you need to know before you hire outside help.
First, let’s start about when you should hire outside help. The clearest sign that it’s time to bring someone on is when your own schedule or capacity is limiting your profitability. For example, maybe administrative tasks are keeping you from focusing on your social media marketing or sales calls. Or maybe you’re struggling to respond quickly to client requests. These are tasks that can actually make money for your business. When you find these money-making activities getting pushed to the bottom of your to-do list, it’s time to hire outside help. Who knows, it might even be time to hire a CEO for your business?
What Are You Ready to Hire For?
Now, you might be wondering what you hire for. As a solopreneur, I totally understand that it can be nerve-wracking to figure out what you should outsource. In order to make sure the person you hire can actually help you with your business, take time to get a pulse on what’s happening in your business. Jot down the biggest stressors in your business, the tasks that are making you feel overwhelmed, and where your work overflow is happening. Take an audit of your week so you can see where your time goes. As you look over your audit, ask yourself one question: “What can I automate, delegate, or eliminate?”Pay close attention to the processes that you’re consistently repeating. When a process is clearly defined and tested, it’s easier to automate or delegate to someone else. That’s your first hire! Our business skyrocketed when we started with our first hire over five years ago. Instead of getting wrapped up in repetitive, daily tasks, Morgan and I were able to focus on the long-term goals that would help us grow the business. Our account, vision, plan, and revenue have grown exponentially since that first hire. Even now, with almost 20 people on the SBZ team, it’s still nerve-wracking to hire someone. But, even if it’s uncomfortable, it’s important to outsource so you can continue to grow your business.
How Outsourcing Helped Laura Take Her Business to the Next Level
Finally, let's take a look at the experience that one of my high-level coaching PRO clients had when she recently made her first hire. Laura Brock, @thehouseofhanbury, is a seller specializing in antique treasures and vintage finds. She was having major success on Instagram™, but she needed someone to help her with the behind-the-scenes tasks. Laura is like a lot of soloprenuers trying to do it all. She was struggling to pack, ship, keep track of inventory, plan her Instagram™ posts, and all the other tasks needed to keep her business going. She worked with my team member, Kate, to write standard operating procedures for her flash and live sales. Then, they worked together to decide on all the things she could outsource. Now, Laura has someone helping her pack/ship after sales, prep Instagram™ posts, handle inventory, post products on her new website, and manage her accounting. Finally, Laura has the time to focus on the tasks that she loves that will help her meet her business goals. Even better, with more time back in her life, she’s been able to take on two coaching clients which is the direction she’s looking to expand in. Laura has found the perfect way to get sh*t done and is thriving on Instagram™.
