Instagram Stories Strategy (Know What to Share in IG Stories)

Instagram Stories is the most popular neighborhood on Instagram. Are you using it regularly? Or are you struggling with what to share?  With over 500 million people using Instagram Stories every day, this is a great way to engage with your current followers and get your content in front of new people. In this blog post I’m breaking down five ways you can share your Instagram posts in Stories.
In this blog post:
    • Give Context to Your Instagram Post
    • Let People Know You Have a New Post
    • Share a Screenshot of Your Followers' Feedback
    • Add Engagement Stickers
    • Post Again Later in the Week

3 S’s of an Instagram Story Strategy

Before we dive into how you can improve your Instagram Stories strategy, let’s go over the basics. One of the best, and most basic ways, to improve engagement on your feed is by sharing your posts in Instagram Stories. You've worked really hard on your Instagram content, so why not make sure you're getting the most out of it?  Every time you post on your feed, you should share a preview of the post in your Stories. Ultimately, everyone has a favorite “Instagram neighborhood,” so it’s important that your content is visible to your followers wherever they prefer to browse.  As far as the Instagram algorithm is concerned, sharing your posts in Stories is a win-win. The more time people spend looking at your content, whether it’s in the feed or Instagram Stories, the more likely they are to see your content in the future.  Here’s how to share a post from your feed in your Instagram Stories and change the background color to match your brand:
  • First, tap on the airplane icon under the post.

  • Tap on “add post to your story.”

  • Tap on the writing tool.

  • Finally, once you pick your brand color, hold your finger down on the Instagram Story background.

#1 Instagram Stories Strategy: Give Context to Your Instagram Post

There’s no denying that Instagram captions are important. But since Instagram captions are not fully visible in Stories, it’s important to provide context for what people can expect in your feed. If you want people to tap in and engage with your post, then you have to give them a reason.  Sue B Zimmerman shares an Instagram Story video where she's pointing up to text that says day 3/3 mini-series DM tips today. If you’re sharing a video clip in Instagram Stories, then it’s even more important to add text. Most people are listening to Stories on mute, so text will nudge people to either turn the sound on or tap over to explore your feed.

#2 Instagram Stories Strategy: Let People Know You Have a New Post

Text and engagement stickers on your Instagram Story are also a great way to let people know when you have a new Instagram post. Consider this your go-to strategy whenever you share new content.  Sue B Zimmerman's Instagram Story shows her sitting on a gray couch while she looks at her phone and the text over the photo says DM tips you don't want to miss. Whether it’s a well-placed Stories sticker or bold text, teasing your post is a simple and effective way to peek people’s interest. This is especially true if you have a special promotion or limited offer that is time sensitive. Use that urgency to encourage people to take action right away by tapping on the post.

#3 Instagram Stories Strategy: Share a Screenshot of Your Followers’ Feedback

So you’ve planned and shared a great Instagram post and the positive comments are rolling in. Now what? Don’t leave those comments buried underneath your post, go ahead and amplify.  And while you can’t share all of your followers’ comments, you can pick one or two to share in Stories. Here’s how to layer a post comment on your Instagram Story.
  • First, scroll down to the Instagram comment you want to capture.

  • Once you’ve taken the screenshot, crop the picture.

  • Save the screenshot to your camera roll.
The menu pops up under the cropped Instagram caption when she's done cropping.
  • Then, go back to the post you want to share in your Instagram Story. Tap on “add post to your Story.”

  • Tap on the sticker icon and pick the camera icon to open your camera roll.

  • Adjust the size of the screenshot on your Instagram Story.

  • Finally, once you’ve added your engagement stickers or other effects, tap to send it to your Story.

#4 Instagram Stories Strategy: Add Engagement Stickers

Instagram Stories engagement stickers are still an amazon way to drive more interactions on your Stories content. From the geolocation to gifs and polls, engagement stickers are an effective way to stop your followers from tapping past through content.  Sue B Zimmerman shares an Instagram Story photo of a garden and a question sticker that says after you're gone what do you want people to reflect on about you. The engagement stickers also help you to cultivate warm leads. For example, if I tap in to look at the results of this Instagram Stories poll I can see all of the people who interacted with the engagement sticker. Now I can use this list of warm leads to spark individual conversations.  Sue B Zimmerman shows the list of individuals who responded to her Instagram question sticker with one account selected so she can type an individual response.

#5 Instagram Stories Strategy: Post Again Later in the Week

Here’s my final tip. If your content is really good, which it should be, then post about it again later in the week. You’ve spent a lot of time creating and sharing content, and it deserves to be seen by as many people as possible.  With over 1 billion active users on Instagram, everyone is bound to follow Instagram at different times. Resharing your content increases the chances of it being seen by a new audience. My team, for example, my team always shares FOMO (fear of missing out) Fridays.
